October.

October is a month of many faces, increasing awareness on a plethora of issues, including breast cancer, child abuse, alcohol, brain injury, disability employment, and about 20 more.Among its many faces is Hispanic Heritage Month, a unique event with an interesting history.

National Hispanic Heritage Month was approved into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The month was a 30-day period beginning on September 15, chosen for being the anniversary of independence for 5 Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. However, in Miami celebrations continue well after October 15 until the end of the month. This can probably be attributed to the size of Miami’s substantial Hispanic population.

Through the collaboration of the school administration and various clubs, including the Hispanic Heritage Club, Coral Reef will be increasing awareness and celebrating the Hispanic community in many ways. The events kick off with the Hispanic Heritage Show occurring on the 12th.

Throughout the second half of the month a section of a school hallway as well as the teachers’ doors will be decorated. Also, there will be a Teachers’ Appreciation Banquet, and many more activities that will be announced. Remember to participate in as many celebrations as you can and find out how you can help by asking club members. If you have any ideas please contact the Hispanic Heritage Club at [email protected]

Coral Reef hopes to hear from you!
